If you select a template when ordering the root server, your IP address will be configured automatically. If you have opted for a manual ISO installation and order an additional IP address at a later date, you will have to configure it manually. This article refers to a Debian 9 system.
Additional IP addresses are configured as so-called ‘alias IP’ on an existing interface (usually eth0). Once we have assigned you an IP address, you will receive an email from us with the necessary parameters (IP, subnet).
Once you have received the data, log onto your server either via ssh or via NoVNC and open the interfaces file with any editor, e.g. with
nano /etc/network/interfaces
Now please add the following sample configuration (please replace the IP, Gateway and Netmask with your new data)
auto eth0:0
iface eth0:0 inet static
address 192.168.1.46
gateway 192.168.1.0
netmask 255.255.255.0
With an additional IPv6, the whole thing would look like this
auto eth0:0
iface eth0:0 inet6 static
address 2002:c0a8:102::
gateway 2002:c0a8:101::
netmask 64
save the whole thing and exit the editor. With the command ifup eth0:0 you can start the new alias interface.
